Building somik.net piece by piece..

Posted by Kedar on Thursday, 25 January, 2007

Here is the config now:

  • media.somik.net : Gallery
  • pictures.somik.net : Drupal for gallery integration only
  • video.somik.net : Streaming videos
  • blog.somik.net : This blog

The pieces I have started building:

  • Blog (this) – Using wordpress here http://wordpress.org/
  • Gallery (media.somik.net) – http://gallery.menalto.com
  • Video (video.somik.net) – QT Streaming server and Quicktime .mov files
  • Trying out a content management system (content.somik.net) – Joomla. Before this, I tried Drupal. But I think these are too much for a personal site. So I will get rid of Joomla today. Removing content.somik.net domain as well.
  • I liked the way drupal integrated with Gallery though. So I might install drupal on pictures.somik.net and host my gallery there. Gallery by itself doesn’t look pretty or it doesn’t blend that well, I think.
  • I dumped wiki.somik.net already. I like blogging more than I like wikis.

Need to do some reading here..

Was watching Star Wars – III ..again!

I am sitting there and wondering what this world will look like in say another 300 years. Think about it, the way it was back in 1600s or 1700s and how it is now. There were no planes in the sky, no rockets or stations in space, no flags on the moon, no skyscrapers, no trains, no cars, no phones, no TV, no internet, no computers, no airconditioners..gosh, so many no’s!! The planet didn’t look so lit up from the sky at night – if someone was watching from up there that is! And look how it is now. What an amazing experience it could be for a 17th century man to get a peak into this century of ours. Oh please, could I take a peak into 25th century please?

Life is so fascinating.. to think that all these folks we see in strollers and infant car seats are going to generate the human revenue (which will again generate more) for the centuries ahead.. and they are going to live their lives in their centuries just like we did in ours and be fascinated by the difference between how they will do things and how we did them today and wonder how centuries ahead of them will be – just like we do now.

I mean, forget cell phones with touch screens, iPods with Video, Wii’s and PS3’s.. what we really need is a time machine folks!..

Hello Universe!

Posted by Kedar on Tuesday, 16 January, 2007

Just going without the ubiquitous “Hello World” start. For non-computer people, “Hello World” is the stupid message programmers print when they try to get something in a working state before they can build a real application on top of it.

I just wish saying “Hello Universe” instead of “Hello World” would mean something, someday. Would love to witness a real UFO or an extra-terrestrial in this small world of ours. It would be great to see humankind getting forced to think “outside the bun” full of our same old daily toppings of politics, war, movies, crime, traffic, weather, festivals, shopping, stock markets and “Breaking news”.

I am sure it will happen someday, maybe today even! Or maybe in a million years.. that’s when man will be forced to think about something bigger than his own small little world. I am just afraid that I may not be here to witness this point in human existence on Earth.

So where does that leave me?.. on this blog. But seriously, I haven’t even thought about what I want to write here. I have other blogs elsewhere such as Blogger.com. But I’ve already converted to the “new Blogger” (with GMail addresses) and Wordpress does not have an import mechanism for the “new Blogger” :-(

So anyway, I will be here.. till I find some purpose for my being here.
