Discoveries and Inventions

Posted by Kedar on Wednesday, 7 February, 2007

Just the other day I was relaxing in the patio at night and I looked up at the sky. There were the stars, the moon and the void. It was an awesome experience but I thought their mysteries were already known – atleast to satisfy the limits of my curiosity.

And I thought, the problems of yesteryears were so down-to-earth and accessible to a common man.A common man could think about an apple falling from a tree, about the sky as he sees it, about the wind that blows, about the earth that supports him everyday, about when does the water boil or freeze and several things like that.

Now as science and technology advances further and further into the future, you have to know a lot before you can see the Questions that need answers!

Assumptions

I believe life is all about assumptions.. the biggest of them is being alive the next moment!

What irritates me..

  • A banana that doesn’t peel off easily.
  • A commode that chokes up on me
  • When I drive for about a mile and realize I have forgotten my wallet @home
  • Elevator buttons don’t work as toggle switches.. Why can’t I undo a pressed button if I accidentally hit a 2 when I wanted to press 12!
  • Waiters generally start looking AWAY just when you start looking FOR them in a restaurant
  • When voice menus only accept voice commands.. and then they go “Sorry, I think I am having trouble understanding you” – especially if you have to “SAY” your credit card number and can’t TYPE it in and then the machine gets it all wrong!!!
  • ….. to be continued! …..

Longest domain name..

Posted by Kedar on Wednesday, 7 February, 2007

Seems like the longest single word domain name is named after a welsh town – http://llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.com/
This is a 58 letter domain!

But this is not the longest place name in the world. That goes to one place in Thailand – 163 characters in length (I don’t want to write it here.. it will mess up my CSS ;-)

A great saying..

If all you’ve got is a hammer, every problem tends to look like a nail.

Posted by Kedar on Tuesday, 6 February, 2007

This will be on display for the first time later this year since being discovered in 1984. There are more than 160,000 fossils going on display with it including a 200 million year old imprint of a lizard on a rock at a time when Earth’s continents were just beginning to separate! More about the ‘Turkana Boy’ here.

Found an interesting site on the origins of Earth: http://www.talkorigins.org

Overloaded Alphabets..

Posted by Kedar on Saturday, 3 February, 2007

These days, companies, technologies start overloading alphabets once they are successful.

Take the case of ‘J’ – everything in Java world starts with a ‘J’ – JBoss, JTA, JMX, JUnit, JNDI, JNI, JDBC, J2EE, AspectJ, JSTL, JMS, JAXP, JAXRPC, JMeter, JProbe, JSP, JSR, JAXB, JAX-WS, JAXR, JAAS,JSF,JRockit..

Now consider ‘X’ – the world of XML – XML, XSLT, XSL, XERCES, XALAN, XPath, XQuery, XLink, XPointer, XForms, XSL-FO, XHTML, AjaX, XDoclet, …

Now ‘i’ – the world of Apple – iPod, iMac, iShuffle, iPhone, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iDisk, .. even iDog!!

Which side of the road has your country chosen?
