There are too many smart people in this world!
Posted by Kedar under Posts
This is what it always comes to, whenever I even begin to think that I might have done something smart - that there are way too many smart people in this world. You do something and before you can even attempt to feel proud about it, there is someone who has done even smarter things in life than you.
It is tough to be an Einstein if you just have an ‘E’ in your name (yeah I do have an ‘e’ in K’e'dar) and all other letters are taken by someone or the other. And then there is the brain too!!
Well, anyway, this feeling is very consistent with one of my earlier posts. It’s not that we have reached a peak of whatever it is, that there is to know. It’s just that, a whole lot of people are trying to find out and do it now-a-days than before.
This is my bold feeling about the legends - There is way too much competition these days to be eligible for a legendary status. I wonder if anybody in this century or the last decade of the 20th century will ever be called a legend! Sure Bill Gates, Gosling, Larry Page/Sergey Brin, Steven Wozniak, Steve Jobs, Linus Torwald, and others are pretty iconic in themselves. And so are latest names such as Rod Johnson (Spring Framework), David Hansson (Ruby on Rails) and others. But what does it take to become a legend?

You kidding? The last decade of the 20th century included the birth of the http://WWW. You want a legend? How about Tim Berners-Lee!

Well, my point was exactly that. I do think that there are many legendary figures even today. And I am sure / I hope they will be looked upon that way in the future. But look at any field - science, movies, music.., people in the current generation are generally not looked upon as “pioneers” or “legends”, and they do not enjoy the almost “god-like” status as the people from the bygone eras. I believe only time gives you the legendary, greater-than-life status - ‘coz then nobody can compete with you!
I know I am playing with the words - so yes these people are truly geniuses, but they do not get that status in their lifetime. This is not knighthood, this is more of a perception thing, I believe.
